Soldier, police officer killed in Mannar

A Sri Lanka Army soldier was killed in a counter-ambush by the Liberation Tigers at Uyilankulam in the north-western Mannar District, around 9.30 p.m. Wednesday, army sources said. The soldiers were lying in ambush ahead of Uyilankulam forward defence lines, the source said.
It is not known if there were any casualties amongst the LTTE. In a separate incident a police officer was shot dead by unidentified gunmen near Uppukulam on the Mannar-Pallimunai road around 1.30 p.m., the police said. The dead police officer was identified as Sergeant A.M.Bandara of the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU). His body was handed over to the Mannar hospital. Meanwhile a Policeman was shot dead around 5.30 p.m. by a lone gunman on Sinna Uppodai road in Batticaloa town. The area was cordoned off by the Police and special investigation units soon after the incident. No one was arrested. The body was taken to the Batticaloa hospital.
