Senior PLOTE member shot dead

A senior member of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the high security zone of the Mannar town around 8 p.m. Tuesday police said. The PLOTE maintains a camp in Mannar town close to the police station.

The PLOTE member was identified as Arunthavarajah Thamilvasan alias Vasan,35. He was a member of the PLOTE's central committee and head of administration.

The police handed over his body to the Mannar hospital. Another man identified as Mohammed Nazar, 32 was wounded in the incident, sources said.

Meanwhile a EPDP cadre was killed when another member's riffle went off accidently at the group's camp in Velanai in the Jaffna peninsula, Tuesday morning. However, sources close to the group said the EPDP member Jerald Anton,24, was killed following a brawl.
