Sri Lankan intelligence officer commits suicide

Mudiyansalage Ananda Bandara Ratnayake (52), from the Military Intelligence camp in Batticaloa, committed suicide by shooting himself at around 12.00 noon yesterday.

The reason for his suicide is not known though sources in Batticaloa said that he had received a telephone call shortly before he took his life. He had served for over 30 years said the sources.

There have been several incidents of suicide among servicemen on active duty recently.

Several cases of soldiers shooting themselves in the foot so that they are relieved of military duties in the forward operational areas have also been reported.
