AMPs go on token strike
[TamilNet, Sunday, 04 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Sick persons and patients in the LTTE controlled western hinterland of Batticaloa will be hard hit tomorrow as the only rural hospital serving the region will be closed down tomorrow as Assistant Medical Practitioners (AMPs) go on an island wide token strike tomorrow.
The Palugamam rural hospital is the only medical facility available to more than hundred thousand people in the Paduvaankarai region. Two other rural hospitals and six dispensaries serving the region have been closed down due to the war. The other rural hospitals in the Batticaloa district at Periya Kallar and Chenkalady will also be closed down. The AMPs are going on a one day token strike to protest against a government decision to appoint MBBS doctors to rural hospitals.
