Two killed in Vavuniya FDL skirmishes

Two Sri Lanka army soldiers were killed and three were wounded in attacks by the Liberation Tigers in the Forward Defence Localities north of Vavuniya Thursday and Friday, military sources in Vavuniya said. The SLA shelled a forward defence locality in Pampaimadu Thursday morning, having observed a group of Tigers in the area. Three soldiers were wounded when the Tigers ambushed an SLA unit that was sent to clear the locality subsequently.

Military sources in Vavuniya said that the LTTE attacked a defence position in Kalmadu Friday morning, killing a soldier; and that on Thursday evening another SLA trooper was killed when the Tigers attacked a forward defence position in Omanthai, north of Vavuniya.

The bodies of the soldiers were brought to the Vavuniya Hospital.

In a seperate incident, a Sri Lanka Army soldier was killed when a suspected LTTE member opened fire at an army check post in Mahindapura around 12.45 p.m. Friday, army sources said. Mahindapura is in the Serunuwara police area, south of Trincomalee town.

Three Tamil civilians, including two women were killed in the ensuing fire-fight, said sources Trincomalee. A police constable and two civilians were also wounded in the incident, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Police sources in Vavuniya said that the body of a youth that was found with gun shot wounds near the cemetery in the suburb of Nelukkulam on Tuesday was identified by relatives as that of Dilip Kumar Muthukumar, 21.

The youth was staying with relatives in Veppankulam, a suburb of Vavuniya town, and was studying in a private tuition centre Police said. He is from the village of Vadivaithakal in the Cheddikulam division of the Vavuniya district, relatives said.
