JVP demonstrates against cease-fire agreement

More than a one thousand Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) cadres and activists, including a large number of buddhist monks demonstrated Monday afternoon in Colombo protesting against the cease-fire agreement signed by the Sri Lanka Government and the Liberation Tigers.

The protest, which began around 3 p.m. went on for nearly an hour.

The JVP, a self styled radical Marxist party emerged as a powerful third force in Sinhala politics with sixteen MPs at the general elections on 5 December last year.

JVP which draws on Sinhala nationalist sentiments to augment its popularity has said that it will oppose tooth and nail any federal solution to the ethnic conflict in the island.
