Buddhist monk opens Annai Poopathi hall

At an event attended by more than twenty five thousand people, Venerable Kurunagala Maha Galkadavela Punniyasara Thera Friday afternoon declared open the Annai Poopathi Memorial Hall constructed at Navalady in Batticaloa. Four other Buddhist monks from Kurunagala also participated at the fourteenth anniversary memorial services of Annai Poopathi held in the eastern town Friday.

The portrait of Annai Poopathi was taken in a procession in a decorated vehicle from Kallady Thiruchenthoor Murugan Temple to Navalady Annai Poopathi Memorial Hall Friday evening. Thereafter Ms Gaya, a senior cadre of the LTTEís political section in the Ampara-Batticaloa district hoisted the LTTE flag. Residents from Kokkadicholai, Karadianaru and Kannanguda in LTTE held region came in thousands by vehicles to attend the Annai Poopathi death anniversary meeting. Annai Poopathi fasted unto death fourteen years ago at Navalady demanding that the Indian government should declare a ceasefire and immediately commence peace talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
