The police took into custody Jayanthi Ranjani (32) and her sister R. Selvi, (22) at a checkpoint near St. John's College Jaffna last evening said Catholic church sources in Jaffna.
The women, were alleged to have been arrested for having in their possession literature of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The sources said, however, that the material had been found between the leaves of old books the women had with them. They had found the books when cleaning an office run by Canadian missionaries at Gurunagar. Following this, the police raided the missionary office and took into custody Godwin Camillus (21), who works there. The father of the two ladies is a cook at the Bishop's House in Jaffna. The Bishop of Jaffna Thomas Savundraranayagam has complained to the Jaffna town commander Susantha Mendis of this arrest.
