Sri Lanka Minister for Media Mangala Samaraweera, dissociated the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sudu Nelum Movementor (SNM) White Lotus Movement, from the actions of Mr. Mangala Nesan a candidate for the forthcoming local government elections in the north, said press sources in Jaffna.
Speaking to the Jaffna Journalists Association today, the Minister emphasised that neither the SLFP nor the SNM were responsible for Mr. Mangala Nesan's corrupt activities. The controversy arose when Mr. Mangala Neasn, who was nominated by the SLFP's official propaganda arm, the SNM, to stand for local government elections for the Jaffna Municipal Council, decided to contest under the banner of the Eelam Peoples' Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF). This decision followed the failure of the Jaffna SLFP branch to get the approval of the General Secretary of the SLFP to contest the polls. The EPRLF is one of the ex-militant organisations contesting the elections.
