Nine thousand SLA devices destroyed

The civilian demining unit of the Liberation Tigers in a single week unearthed and destroyed almost nine thousand active mines and pieces of ordnance left behind by the Sri Lankan Army in Vavuniya North.

Between June 5 and June 12, a total of 8,862 such devices were cleared, including 3,500 Pakistani-made P4 MK1 Anti-Personnel (AP) mines. The P4 MK1 mine has a casualty radius of 3m and a damage zone extending to 10 m.

The other explosive devices destroyed were detailed as: 1454 152mm artillery shells, 200 122mm artillery shells, 297 120mm mortar rounds, 1,128 82mm mortar rounds, 474 RPG rounds, 860 60mm mortar rounds, 130 40mm rounds, 402 RCL rounds, 5 K44 claymore mines, 110 hand grenades and 950 improvised booby traps.
