Ex-EPDP cadre makes confession on journalist's murder

The confession of an ex-member of the paramilitary group EPDP to the Jaffna Magistrate, Thursday, may throw fresh light on the investigation into the murder of journalist, Mylvaganam Nimalarajan, legal sources in the north said.

Ponnambalam Tharmalingam, a former EPDP member Wednesday surrendered at the special investigation unit of the Jaffna police and expressed his willingness to make a confession to court in regard to the murder of Nimalarajan that took place in October 2000.

Mr.Ranjith de Silva, officer in charge of the special police unit Thursday produced Ponnambalam Tharmalingam in Jaffna Magistrate's court under heavy security.

The Magistrate Mr.R.T.Viknarajah recorded the confession from P.Tharmalingam in his chamber.

The Magistrate ordered the prison authorities to produce Tharmalingam in the courts on Friday.

The ex-EPDP cadre, Tharmalingam has come out with several leads in the unresolved murder of the journalist Nimalarajan, the sources said.

The EPDP had been a close ally of the People's Alliance government led by President Chandrika Kumaratunge at the time of the murder.
