Canadian court rejects stay order request
[TamilNet, Saturday, 17 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Canadian Federal Court rejected today the appeal filed by the Lawyers acting for Suresh Manickavasagam, a tamil activist, against his planned deportation to Sri Lanka from Canada on January 19.
Mr. Suresh's lawyer Mrs. Babara Jackman lodged request for a stay order at the Canadian Provincial courts and Federal courts in Toronto last Friday. Mr. Suresh was taken in to detention in October 1995, pursuant to a security sertificate issued against him under the Immigration Act of Canada. The federal court determined in August last year, after 52 days oh hearing, that the issuance of cerificate, finding Mr. Suresh to be a person inadmissable to Canada under the Immigration Act, was not unreasonable. Mr. Manickavasagam Suresh, 42, entered Canada in 1990 and was recognised as a Convention Refugee by the Refugee Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board in Canada in 1991.
