PA-JVP anti-peace moves criticised

"People's Alliance (PA) and the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are working together to derail the peace process. Peace loving people of the country should not allow these elements to succeed," said Media Minister Mr.Imtiaz Bakeer Markar when addressing a gathering Friday in Trincomalee, after opening the newly built Rs.112 million Post Office complex.

Minister Bakeer Markar further stated, "We could not find a solution to the national question to bring peace and economic stability to the country for the last two decades. It is vital that we succeed in the current peace efforts if the country is to emerge from the current economic crisis."

The Media Minister at the event handed media accreditation cards from the Department of Information to Trincomalee provincial journalists. The Minister also sent the first e-mail from the newly opened Trincomalee Post Office.

The Director of Information Mr.Ariya Rubasinghe and the Postmaster General Mr. W. M. Piyasena also spoke at the gathering.

The main opposition People's Alliance and Marxist Jathika Vimukthi Peramuna last week agreed to work together with plans to prepare a concerted country-wide effort to solve the national and economic problems of the country.

After a delegation from the JVP met President Chandrika Kumaratunge last week, both parties agreed to agitate jointly against any move by the United National Front government that could be detrimental to country's sovereignity, PA sources said.
