Navy assaults Karainagar civilians

Seven Tamil civilians, including two school children, were assaulted by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel at Karainagar in Jaffna, around 7 p.m.,Wednesday, according to a complaint made by area residents to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in the northern peninsula.
According to the complaint, navy personnel alleged to be under the influence of liquor had stopped several civilians at Oori and Pity areas in Karainagar and asked them to produce their national identity cards. When the civilians produced the ID cards provided by the Postal department, the SLN personnel had insisted that they should carry National ID cards, and assaulted them, civilian sources in the area said. The civilians assaulted by the SLN were identified as: T.Kugathasan( 14) student of Karainagar Suntharamoorthy Vidiyalyam, T.Kandeepan( 11) student of Karainagar Hindu College, A.Prabaharan (22), A.Murugavel (26), T.Sivakolunthu (55),
M.Sivarasa (36) and T.Sahathevan (40). The incident has also been brought to the notice of the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna.
