Civilian areas being shelled at night
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 21 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) keeps on firing mortars into the densely populated areas of Valaichenai 30 km north of Batticaloa almost every night despite the mounting civilian toll, said sources in Valaichenai.
It is also doing it to deprive people of the area even of their livelihood says the TamilNet correspondent in Batticaloa. The SLA shells Naasivantheevu, an island in the estuary of the Valaichenai lagoon from the Fisheries Harbour Camp preventing fishermen from going out to fish at night. There are 170 families in this island who are engaged in fishing which is the major source of income for the people of the area. The SLA also shells the Kinnaiyadi area from its Paper Factory Camp. Civilians in the Valaichenai have been continuously subjected to shelling from the SLA camps which dot the locality.
