SLA opens Chavakachcheri-Kachchai road

The Chavakachcheri- Kachchai road in Jaffna district was opened Sunday morning after a period of six years. Priests, leading citizens and members of public attended the function held in connection with the opening of the road. The road was closed for public from 1996 by the SLA due to military operations in Thenmaradchi sector of Jaffna peninsula by the Sri Lanka Army.

Sri Lanka Army's 52-1 Brigade commander, Brigadier Tissa Jayawardene, participating at the event said that other roads in the area currently closed for public will be opened gradually in phases. He added that the opening of the Chavakachcheri-Kachchai road has become a reality due to the ongoing peace process.

Earlier people of Kachchai village informed the SLA that they have decided to launch a agitation on Monday to exert pressure on the security establishment to open the road.

The Kachchai civilians dropped the plans for agitation after the SLA officials stationed in the area had informed the civil leaders in the area that the SLA was getting ready to open the road for public.
