A group of Eelam Peoples' Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) members, hard on the campaign trail for the forthcoming local government elections in Jaffna, were stopped by LTTE members on the Kopai- Urumpirai road yesterday, said residents.
The Liberation Tigers stopped the EPRLF cadres who were travelling in a car which was blaring out party propaganda and asked them to alight by the roadside. The Tigers then played LTTE patriotic songs over the loudspeakers said residents. The embarassed EPRLF cadres were released unharmed soon after the Liberation Tigers had finished playing their songs over the EPRLF's loudspeakers. The EPRLF complained to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) about the incident The SLA has two camps, one at Urumpirai junction and the the other at the Irupaalai - Kopay junction which are both situated close to the place where the incident occurred. The SLA mounted a search for the Tigers yesterday as well as today, following the incident. However, the EPRLF has officially denied that the incident took place at all.
