Disabled Tigers return overland to Batticaloa

Seven wounded and disabled Liberation Tigers recuperating at a rehabilitation centre in Mullaitivu Wednesday travelled through Sri Lanka Army controlled territory to meet relatives in Batticaloa, Tamil press reports said Friday.

The seven female cadres made the journey on Wednesday in a minibus after the SLA gave clearance, the Thinakural newspaper said. They arrived at the LTTE’s office in Batticaloa at about 8am, the paper said.

On Tuesday, the SLA escorted 285 LTTE troops from Batticaloa-Amparai to Vanni. Of the LTTE contingent, 200 were female fighters, travelling to participate in the Tamil Eelam Women Uprising Conference to be held in Vanni. The cadres are expected to participate in the remembrance functions for LTTE Lt. Col. Thileepan.

The journeys are being organised under the aegis of international ceasefire monitors as turbulent weather conditions is making sea travel difficult.
