SLA to be camped among resettlers

Agrarian service officials in the Thenmaradchi Division of Jaffna Thursday said that the Sri Lanka army didn’t guarantee the safety of farmers whom it permitted this week to cultivate their lands in the Thanangkilappu area. The SLA had informed the officials that fields lying within thousand meters west of the Chavakachcheri Thanangkilappu Road and 300 meters south of the A9 Road in this sector are very heavily mined.

There may be mines in the fields even beyond these high-risk zones, according the SLA.

That the SLA had granted permission to farmers in Thanangkilappu to cultivate their lands by the Chavakachcheri Thanangkilappu Road and south of the A9 received wide publicity in the Jaffna press Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the 55 Division of the SLA said it would permit the residents of the Meesalai Educated Women’s Colony Scheme to resettle in their homes from 10 October.

However, the SLA said it would be camped in the village, occupying 15 houses belonging to residents.

The people of the Meesalai Educated Women’s Colony Scheme fled the war in 2000.
