Bribery officials quiz JVP leader

The parliamentary group leader of the Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Mr.Wimal Weerawanse, Tuesday appeared before the Bribery and Corruption Commission on notice. He was quizzed by a team of bribery officials about a complaint lodged by a person from Piliyandala that he was maintaining a bank account with another person in the name of JVP, sources said.

The Bribery and Corruption Commission last month noticed Mr.Weerawanse to appear for an investigation in to the complaint lodged by one Lal Perera on a specified date. Later the commission allowed Mr.Weerawanse to appear on a latter date on his request.

Mr.Weerawanse went to the commission office Tuesday morning around 9.30 with his Attorney-at-Law. Commission officials had interrogated him for several hours, sources said.

The JVP is the third largest political party in the present parliament with sixteen members. The JVP opposes the present peace efforts of the United National Front government.
