The Thenmaradchi office of the paramilitary Eelam People's Democratic
Party (EPDP) located at Nunavil east in the Jaffna district was attacked by
unidentified men around mid night Wednesday, police sources said.
About twenty-five unidentified youths had first entered the office forcibly
by removing the doors. Later, they started attacking some members of the
EPDP, who were in the office. The police personnel deployed to give
protection to the office were in the upper floor of the building at the
time of attack. Following the attack, the EPDP members fled to safety through the back door.
The attackers left the area when the police personnel fired warning shots
from the building, sources said. Later in the afternoon Thursday, a team of police and SLA officials visited
the scene to conduct inquiries. Meanwhile, around 2 p.m. Thursday a group of youths came in three buses to
the spot and attempted to remove the name board of the EPDP office. They
withdrew from the scene when the Police used force to disperse them, the
sources said.
