Veteran Tamil activist Gunanayagam passes away in Trincomalee

A veteran Tamil social worker and a politician in Trincomalee district Mr. Subramaniam Gunanayagam passed away Thursday at the age of seventy after a brief illness.
He joined the Tamil Arasu Katchi (Federal party) during 1950s. He was in the forefront of the Tamil liberation struggle in 1960s under the leadership of "Thanthai Chelva”, Mr.S.J.V.Chelvanayakam, leader of the Federal Party. At the time of his death he was holding the post of a member of the central working committee of the Tamil United National Front (TULF), the main constituent of the Tamil National Alliance. Born on 18.4.1933 at Kattaiparichchan village in the Muttur East he became the Chairman of the village council. He worked as a Grama Niladhari Officer (village level) at Kattaiparichchan until his retirement. The Secretary of the TULF, Trincomalee district branch Mr.S.Sriskandarajah in a condolence message has said the demise of Mr. Gunanayagam has been irreparable loss to Tamils in the district at a time when his services are needed. Mr. Gunanayagam was in the forefront whenever injustices are done to Tamils in Muttur area.
