Poll day begins with deserted streets

Jaffna town was mostly deserted and all the shops there were closed this morning as election officials awaited voters to turn up at their respective polling booths.

Few people moved about in the suburbs.

The TN correspondent said that there was heavy firing from Sri Lankan army positions in and around the town through the night.
