New publications in Jaffna

Two Tamil weeklies will begin publishing from Jaffna from next month said sources in Jaffna today. One is expected to be named 'Sooriyakanthi' and the other 'Kaalaikathir'.

The former will be published by some businessmen and edited by a former journalist from the Eelanaadu, which was a long established daily in Jaffna.

The Eelanaadu shited to the Vanni in late 1995 when the army captured Jaffna peninsula. It was published there until April last year.

The Sooriyakatnhi is expected to come out on February 2.

The Kaalaikathir is backed by the EPRLF said sources. The group, which was routed in Thursday's polls has invested a large amount of capital in the paper said sources.

'Sinna Bala',formerly central committee member of the EROS, and who contested the Valikamam north Pradeshiya Sabha as the EPRLF's chief candidate has been tentatively named the editor of Kalaikathir.

The Sooriyakanthi will be edited by a former journalist of the Eelanaadu called S. Perumal said the sources.
