Elderly couple injured in Batticaloa grenade attack

Thambipillai Tharmalingam (68) and his wife Kirupairajah Ariyavathi (65) were injured when unknown assailants lobbed a grenade inside their house in Settukudah 2km west of Batticaloa town at 8.40pm Monday, police sources said. Both have been admitted to the Batticaloa Teaching hospital, medical sources said.

The couple were seated in the front poach talking when the attack took place.

Meanwhile, Batticaloa branch head of Mothers Front escaped injuries when two grenade thrown into her home at 7.15pm Monday failed to explode, sources said.

Security sources speculated that the grenade incidents were likely carried out in response to the killing of Razeek group operative Kathirgamathamby Navasooriam who was shot dead at 1 pm Monday.

Injured couple's one son is in the Tiger movement.

Batticaloa police are conducting investigations.
