Tamil students uprising celebrated in Northeast

Thousands of Tamil students in the Northeast Friday celebrated the day of Student Uprising participating in processions and holding public meetings in several parts of the Northeast, sources from different districts in Northeast said.

In Trincomalee town the police objected to the hoisting of the Tamil Eelam National Flag at Orr’s Hill children’s park where a public meeting was held. The Police said the children’s park, which is situated facing the Trincomalee harbour, is under the control of the government forces. On a complaint made by the Police the head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee Mr.Jan Ledang rushed to the site and told the LTTE activists to bring down the LTTE flag. However, the flag was only brought down at the conclusion of the full programme, sources in the eastern port town said.
In Trincomalee town hundreds of Tamil students marched to the Orr’s Hill children’s park, which is located between the Trincomalee harbour and the office of the northeast Governor Major general Asoka Jayawardene from various schools in the town and its outskirts.

In Mutur division Student Uprising celebration were held at Chenaiyoor and Killiveddy south on a grand scale, the sources said.
In Jaffna town thousands of students went in procession from Jaffna Central College to Jaffna Hindu College carrying photographs of leader of the LTTE, Mr.V.Pirapaharan. They shouted slogans demanding the full implementation of the Cease-Fire Agreement and the withdrawal of the Sri Lankan armed forces from densely populated areas, enabling the resettlement of internally displaced in their own lands. The event was presided by Mr.S.Nilakshan, leader of the student union.
Head of the Thamileelam Students Forum Mr.Elilanban garlanded the photograph of Major Murali. Celebrations also took place at the Munthiri Junction between Urumpirai and Kopay Krishnan Kovil junction at the spot where Jaffna district student leader Major Murali died. The deputy political head of the LTTE in Jaffna Mr.Semmanan delivered the keynote address.
Special celebrations were held near the statue of Pon.Sivakumaran, the first Maveerar in Tamil Eelam struggle, in Urumpirai junction at 9 a.m. Friday. Students marched to this venue from Urumpirai Hindu College grounds. Ms Annaledchumi Ponnuthurai garlanded the statue of her son Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran, sources in Jaffna said.
In Vadamaradchi celebrations were held at Nelliady Madhya Maha Vidiyalayam. Vadamarachchi divisional student organization head Mr.P.Athithan presided.
In Thenmaradchi, the procession began from Meesalai junction at 10 am Friday and arrived Chavakachcheri Hindu College Grounds where celebrations were held, the sources said.
In the Jaffna Islets, celebrations took place in Velanai Central College.
