Journalists to see Kilinochchi
[TamilNet, Saturday, 14 February 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Sri Lankan government announced today that it will take the press to Kilinochchi by air tomorrow. The government information department has informed newspapers and news agencies in Colombo that journalists would be flown to Kilinochchi tomorrow morning.
The move by the Sri Lankan government comes in the wake of claims by the Liberation Tigers that they are in control of the northern town which was a Sri Lankan army base. The LTTE claimed that it overran the Kilinochchi base on February 1 and is holding it against concerted attempts by the Sri Lankan army to recapture the town. Meanwhile several civilians who arrived in Vavuniya last week from the LTTE controlled parts of the Vanni said that the town is still being held by the Tigers.
