MPGA elects representative committee

[TamilNet, Saturday, 21 February 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Members of the Missing Persons' Guardian Association (MPGA) of Jaffna gathered at the St. Bosco primary school in Jaffna town today, to elect an independent committee to represent their interests officially.

MPGA sources said that this was being done at the suggestion of the Sri Lankan President when they met her in Colombo on December 12, last year.

The overt involvement of the EPDP in all the affairs of the MPGA and the group's hold on its office bearers had prompted the President to make this suggestion, said MPGA members who were present at the meeting today.

They said members of the delegation which was taken by the EPDP leader Douglas Devananda to meet the President had later protested bitterly that they had been blatantly used by the EPDP for gaining mileage in the local government polls.

The following persons were elected today by members of the MPGA to form the committee.

1. Kanakaratnam Kesavan, additional district judge, Jaffna- President

2. Subramaniam Paramananthan

3. Rev. R. Soosainathan

4. S. Maheswara kurukkal, Hindu Priests' Association

5. V. S Paramanathan, farmer
