JVP’s second anti-peace march to commence in Kandy

The Sinhala nationalist cum Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) announced Thursday that its second five-day march from Kandy to Colombo, protesting against the present peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers, would commence on September 27.

The march would reach Colombo’s Lipton's Square on October 1 and conclude with a mass rally demanding the United National Front government to abandon the present peace process, as “it would cause immense and irreparable harm to the sovereignty and integrity of the country,” the JVP said.

Reliable JVP sources said Thursday said that they expected at least 20 Peoples’ Alliance parliamentarians would participate in the Kandy-Colombo march.

Since the collapse of the seven month talks between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna to forge a political alliance, a group of PA parliamentarians have indicated their willingness to the PA leadership to participate in any protest campaign the JVP organizes against the present peace process and granting the power of the interim administrative council to the LTTE, political sources said.

Mr.Anura Bandaranaike, a PA parliamentarian who is also the only brother of President Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunge, has publicly said at several meetings that despite the collapse of previous talks, new talks to form a political alliance between the SLFP and JVP would commence soon, sources said.
