Karachi displaced given resettlement grants

7130 of the displaced families from Karachi in Kilinochchi
district who had applied for resettlement grants have been given financial assistance ranging from Rs. 25000 to Rs.3000, said Secretary of Karachi Pradeshiya Sabai,
Pon.Nithyananthan.
"There are 42 Grama Sevaka divisions in the Karachi Pradeshiya Sabai.
Residents in 32 of the Grama Sevaka divisions fled their homes
and resettled in other villages of Vanni
during the "Sath Jeya" offensive of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 1997,"
Nithyananthan said. "After the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) re-captured Kilinochchi
the displaced returned to their former homes and villages in Karachi
and applied for resettlement assistance. We are reviewing the applications
in chronological order they were submitted and providing these families
the necessary assistance," added Mr. Nithyananthan. The following is a summary of the awards so far:
- 6641 families Rs.25,000 each
- 453 families Rs.15,000 each
- 1 family Rs.11,000
- 3 families Rs.10,000 each
- 6 families Rs.8,000 each
- 26 families Rs.3,000 each
Mr.Nithananthan further said that he is taking all efforts necessary
to ensure that those who received an amount less
than Rs.25,000 and those who have not been awarded any financial
assistance, are given the full entitlement of Rs.25,000 soon.
