Trincomalee district commemorates Thileepan

The sixteenth death anniversary of Lt. Col. Thileepan, a senior leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was observed in the Trincomalee district on Friday, with token fasting and public meetings and cultural events held in several places, including Sampur in Muttur east, Eachchilampathu, Tampalakamam, Nilaveli and Kumburupiddy and other Tamil villages, sources said.

Large numbers of students, men and women participated in the celebrations held at the Trincomalee town political office of the LTTE, presided over by Trincomalee district martyrs' unit, Mr.Thennavan Friday morning. The LTTE’s district education head, Ms. Kaaronja hoisted the Thamileelam national flag, sources said.

Ms. Marimuttu Easwary, mother of LTTE martyr Lt.Sankili, lit the general flame of sacrifice and Ms. Nadarajah Thavamany, mother of LTTE martyr Major Senkathirvaanan, lit the flame of sacrifice in front of the photograph of Lt. Col.Thileepan, garlanded it and offered flowers, sources said.

The Secretary of the Trincomalee District Refugees' Welfare Association, Mr.S.Jesuthasan, Tamil Women’s Society President Ms Mr.Kanmany and several others also spoke.

The LTTE’s political offices at Tampalakamam, Kumburupiddy, Nilaveli and Sampoor areas organized Thileepan's commemoration events, sources said.
