SLA tests Jaffna army drivers on traffic law[TamilNet, Sunday, 02 November 2003, 04:37 GMT]The Sri Lanka Army high command in the Jaffna district has taken steps to provide driving license to all its personnel who drive army vehicles on Jaffna roads. Hence the first written driving test examination for army drivers was held at the Varani Central Maha Vidiyalayam last Friday, security sources said. SLA drivers working in the army camps located in the Vadamaradchi and Thenmaradchi divisions in the Jaffna district sat for the examination under the supervision of military police, security sources said. The Jaffna Magistrate recently accepted the driving license given by the SLA high command when it was produced by an army driver involved in an accident in the Jaffna district, legal sources said. Hence the SLA decided to get its drivers competent in driving and also to possess the required document to produce whenever they appear in courts relating to traffic offences, following the recent spate of accidents in which army vehicles were involved, sources said. Meanwhile, the Jaffna Additional Magistrate Ms. Srinithi Nandasekaran recently made an order in an accident case in which an army vehicle was involved, that no army vehicles should be allowed on road without third party insurance, legal sources said.
