Foundation stone laid for Thileepan Health Centre in Pooneryn

The foundation stone for the Thileepan Health Centre (Community Hospital & Maternity Home), was laid down by Dr. Kuna Iynkaran Wednesday at 10.30 a.m. The centre is already runnng in a temporary accommodation, sources said.




Ten Thileepan Primary care health centres have been operating in the NorthEast.

The health work carried out by the Thileepan centres are vital to meeting the needs of the local population as hospitals are often far away and transport is not easily available.

Since internally displaced people are moving back to their homes, there is an increasing demand for the use of the Thileepan Centres.

The centres are manned by Medical Practitioners who have had at least 6 years of field experience and further training in general medicine, paediatrics, maternity care and emergencies such as snake bites and asthma. 

The health services of the NorthEast are developing a primary health care service, providing much of the health care at the local level. This type of health care system is easily available to the population and reduces the burden on secondary hospital services.

Centre for Health Care in Kilinochchi is running the Thileepan centres and the effort is being supported by Tamils Health Organisation (THO), a diaspora organisation based in the UK.
