Couple, infant murdered in Jaffna high security area

A couple and their eight month old infant were found murdered near the Kanakampuliyadi Junction in Jaffna Friday, Police in Chavakachcheri said. The couple’s home is in an isolated spot surrounded by a large number of Sri Lankan military positions and camps. Police said that the family may have been murdered three days ago. Their throats were slit.
A relative had gone in search of them Friday as they had failed to turn up for the Pongal Festival at his home on Thursday. He found the three lying dead in their house, Police said. The home of the murdered couple in situated by the Puttur-Madduvil Road near the Kanakampuliyadi Junction. The SLA relocated several of its camps in the Thenmaradchi division of Jaffna around Kanakampuliyadi Junction area after the ceasefire in 2002. Chavakachcheri magistrate visited the scene of the crime and instructed the Police to hand over the bodies of the couple and the infant to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital pending further investigations. Chavakachcheri Police identified the dead as Ilankanathan Suthakaran, 38, Suthakaran Swarnawathy, 21, and Vaishnan, their infant son.
