Jaffna celebrates International Women's day

The International Women's Day was celebrated in the Jaffna district Monday on the theme "We want our land." The Jaffna District Forum against Sexual and other Violence on Women organized awareness processions and other cultural events related to women liberation programme in the district,

A motorcade, which commenced Monday around 11 a.m. from the office of the UNHCR located in Temple Road in Nallur returned to the same site at about 6 p.m. covering areas where internally displaced have been staying
and areas where resettled Muslim families live, sources said. Pamphlets urging women to oppose suppression and oppression of their basic rights were distributed. At the conclusion a meeting was held at Gurunagar
common grounds, sources said. Representatives of UNHCR, IDP project of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Children and Women Unit of the Jaffna Police and several humanitarian agencies participated in the Gurunagar meeting. The Women Development Project of the Refugees Rehabilitation Organization organized International Women's Day celebration at Jaffna Navalar Cultural Hall Monday evening. Women Development Centre Director Ms Saroja Sivachchandran, LTTE women political head Ms Thamilini, lawyer Ms Linga Thurairajah and
several leading women activists participated in the meeting.
