Election violence complaints reach 625

With 47 incidents of election related violence for the last twenty four hours ending Friday morning at 6 a.m. the total number of complaints was increased to 625 since the start of submitting nominations from February 17th, the Police Election Secretariat said Friday.
The United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has so far made 253 complaints and the United National Party 173, police said. The Inspector General of Police Mr.Indra de Silva has directed all senior Deputy Inspector Generals of Police to obtain assistance as and when required from the three State armed forces. All police stations in the country have been directed to entertain complaints regarding the violation of election laws from all candidates and members of the public, sources said. DIG Mr.Jayantha Wickramaratne oversees the violation of election laws while DIG Mr. Gamini Navaretna is in charge of the Unit on Election Offences.
