The Jaffna Government Agent (GA) Mr. S. Shanmuganathan, speaking at the opening ceremony of the Planning Secretariat in the Jaffna Kachcheri this morning around 10 a.m., said that the Jaffna Town SLA Commander has admonished him about government officials in Jaffna who meet the Liberation Tigers and take instructions from them.
He said that anyone found guilty of this could get seventeen years in prison. The Sri Lankan security forces headquarters at Palaly in Jaffna issued a press note on Wednesday warning government officials and businessmen in the peninsula who provide assistance to the Liberation Tigers and take instructions from them. "We will be compelled to take action against any of the government servants, businessmen and others who are violating these instructions", the statement said. Mr. Sivathasan MP of the EPDP also spoke at the function. Two EPDP members elected in January to the Nallur and Uduvil Pradheshiya Sabhas but who are yet to take their oaths addressed the gathering as well. Meanwhile, a procession of about hundred civilians organised by the PLOTE demanding that the government should begin a passenger ship service to Jaffna handed over a memorandum to the Jaffna GA today.
