BBC launches Tamil online news service

Popularity of the BBC's Tamil service, "Thamil Osai," broadcasting to listeners in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, North America, Western Europe and Australia, has prompted the BBC to start an online news service www.bbctamil.com.

While welcoming the Unicode usage, Tamil computer users said that the service allowed only Windows users to view the pages. They said that BBC should consider supporting Linux and Mac Operating systems.

BBC Thamil Osai began its shortwave broadcast on 3 May 1941 initially as a weekly newsletter, progressing to a bi-weekly program in the 1980 and to daily 30 minutes broadcasts in 1990s.

Tamil was one of the first BBC South Asian languages to be broadcast.
