Jaffna MPs campaign for cease-fire
[TamilNet, Saturday, 04 April 1998, 23:59 GMT]
A signature collection campaign began in Jaffna today demanding an immediate cease-fire. The campaign, however, is low key and is backed by the EPDP break away MPs Rameswaran and Ramamoorthy. The memorandum states that the Liberation Tigers and the government should come forward to stop the war and create conditions for peace.
It says that the 27 Tamil members of Parliament have come together for working towards bringing about the cease-fire. Meanwhile the Sri Lankan Army launched a cordon and search operation in Iththavil, Muhamaalai and Eluthumattuvaal in the Thenmaradchi division in Jaffna from early morning 5.a.m. today. The operation was on until 2 a.m. this afternoon, said sources in Jaffna. Civilians were herded in large numbers to community centres and were subjected to long interrogations.
