Civilian hit by shelling

A civilian was injured at Naasivanthivu, a village near Valaichenai on the shore of the Valaichenai lagoon 30 km north of Batticaloa around 2:00 a.m. today, when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelled the village, said sources in Valaichenai.

The injured man Thambimuttu Nadarajah (28) and father of four children, is being treated for his injuries at Batticaloa Hospital. He was sleeping in the front part of his house when he was struck by the shellfire.

Unconfirmed reports from SLA circles told the TamilNet correspondent that the shelling, which had originated from one of the camps that dot the Valaichenai area, was in response to information received that the LTTE was planning to cross the Valaichenai lagoon by boat.
