Few Tamils to receive graduate training

Of the first batch of 17,018 unemployed graduates who are to begin their three-month training programme Thursday at 215 centres in 23 districts excluding Killinochchi and Mullaitivu districts only 2,140 (11.4%) are Tamil medium graduates and the rest 14,883 are Sinhalese. These graduates will be given employment after the training programme, education sources said.
Meanwhile the names of second batch of 24,207 unemployed graduates were released Wednesday. But the breakdown on medium wise was not released till Wednesday evening, sources said. Finance Minister Dr.Sarath Amunugama said '' granting jobs to unemployed graduates is one of our election pledges.'' Most number of graduates after training would be drafted into the teaching profession. By the end of the year all teaching vacancies now exist in the 324 national schools will be filled, said Education Ministry Secretary Dr (Ms) Tara de Mel. Graduates will be paid monthly allowance of Rs: 6,000/= during the three month training period, sources said.
