Sri Lankan Army at the Vallipuram sentry point has banned civilians from taking bread into Vadamaradchi East region in the Jaffna Peninsula, said local residents. The ban was introduced on Saturday, April 11, they said.
The SLA says that bread and other food items transported into this region might be used by the Liberation Tigers. Last month, the SLA ordered bakeries in Mantkaadu, Nagarkovil, Maamunai and Sempiyanpattru in the region to close. Meanwhile, civilians traveling through the Vallipuram sentry point are being vigorously searched and checked by the army, said sources in Jaffna. Furthermore, whilst civilians had earlier been allowed to travel trough this point until 5.00 p.m. each day, the route is now closed at 4.30 p.m., they said. Vadamaradchi East is not controlled by the SLA.
