Trincomalee new court complex to be opened Sunday

World Bank funded three-storied court complex in Trincomalee town built at a cost of about 79 million rupees is to be opened Sunday morning by the Chief Justice Mr.Sarath Nanda Silva. Justice Minister Mr.John Seneviratne and Attorney General Mr.K.C.Kamalasabeyson are also scheduled to participate in the event, Justice Ministry sources said.
The new court complex is to house six courts- two High Courts including a Commercial High Court, one District Court, one Labour Tribunal and two Magistrate Courts, legal sources said. The new High Court for Trincomalee district is to function officially from September 13, a day after the opening of the new court complex. Earlier the East High Court, which is located in Batticaloa town, covered the Trincomalee district by conducting circuit session once in two months. Justice Ministry created a new High Court for Trincomalee district with effect from August 1st but it would officially start hearing cases from September 13th, legal sources said. Mr.Anton Balasingham has been promoted as High Court Judge, Trincomalee with effect from August 1st. Earlier he was the Trincomalee District Court Judge. Mr.S.Thiagendran has been promoted Trincomalee District Judge. Earlier he was the Trincomalee Magistrate. Mr.M.Ganesharajah has been appointed Trincomalee Magistrate. Till Friday the Trincomalee District Court functioned in a dilapidated building, which was constructed by the Britishers during colonial period, sources said.
