The Water-Cutting (Theertham) festival of the historic Vallipuram Alvar Temple was held Tuesday in the seacoast of Vallipuram in Vadamarachchi division in Jaffna district. Several thousands of pilgrims participated in the event after several years, sources said.

Since 1996 the government security forces did not allow devotees in large number to go to seacoast to participate in the Vallipuram temple water-cutting festival for security reasons.

This year large number of devotees from all parts of the country was allowed to participate in the festival.

Independent sources estimated about seventy five thousand devotees attended the festival.
