Youths beaten up at STF camp

More than a dozen youths, mostly from the village of Eruvil, 38 km south of Batticaloa, were severly beaten up by the Special Task Froce (STF) with clubs and steel wires yesterday when they reported to the Kaluwanchikudy STF camp to notify their presence by signing a speccial register, said sources in the area.
The punishment was due to their failure to report to the STF about the activities of the Liberation Tigers in their village. The LTTE had put up posters at Eruvil over the weekend to commemorate the 10th death anniversary of Annai Poopathy. Annai Poopathy fasted to death against the atrocities of the Indian Army in Batticaloa on April 19 1988. The day was marked by series of cultural arrangements in Tamil areas of the island. The STF specifically instructs youth who are asked to report to its camp every weekend, to provide prompt information of LTTE activity in their respective areas. More than 140 youths have to report to the STF camp at Kaluwanchikudy on weekends.
