ISGA critical to peace- Elilan

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 19 October 2004, 03:15 GMT]
"If the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) does not accept our committed stand to find a negotiated political resolution to the Tamil national question on the basis of our Interim Self-Governing Authority (ISGA) proposals then war will be inevitable. We are prepared to face that prospect," said Mr.Elilan, Trincomalee district political head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) addressing a meeting held in Salli, a Tamil village north of Trincomalee as a part of the three day district level political awareness campaign of the Tamil national Alliance (TNA).

"A resolution to the Tamil national question would be arrived by negotiation or through war. Whichever way the resolution is found Tamils and Muslims in the northeast province have to live in their traditional soil. Muslim people should bear this in mind and work with Tamils to achieve a solution acceptable to both communities," Mr.Elilan said at a meeting in Pulmoddai, a traditional Muslim village in the north of Trincomalee district.

He further said that "our national leader is committed to ensure that the rights of Muslims in the northeast are respected. Tamil people have suffered due to the suppression by Sinhala chauvinism. We will not allow Muslims to suffer the same fate."

"Today we are now not allowing resettlement in some areas in our controlled area as we have to maintain a security zone to strengthen us militarily. Peace currently prevails in Sri lanka only because our military strength. For example, we have not allowed not only Muslim villagers but also Tamils to resettle Upparu village in Trincomalee district because of its strategic importance. However we have allowed Muslim villagers to do cultivation in Kurankupanchchan which is located in the LTTE controlled area," said Mr.Elilan.
