Sri Lankan security forces Thursday prevented fishermen of Valvettithurai in Vadamaradchchi division in Jaffna district from deepening the jetty. A soldier threatened Mr.P.Wijendran, Treasurer of Valvettithurai Fisheries Co-operative Society when he protested, fisheries sources said.

Tension prevailed in the area when a soldier pressed his rifle on the chest of Mr.Wijendran. A High official of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) rushed to the scene after learning of the incident and allowed fishermen to deepen the jetty, fisheries sources said.

Meanwhile, representatives of the VVT Fisheries Society have made complaints to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Jaffna about the harassment by government troops located in their villages.

One fisheries society official said no positive action has been taken by the SLMM regarding their complaints, fisheries sources said.
