Millennium scholarships awards to be held

One thousand and fourteen students who have qualified 2002 GCE Ordinary Level examination and currently following GCE A/L classes in 24 education zones of the northeast province are to be awarded with Millennium Scholarships under a scheme formulated by Sri Lanka's Presidential Secretariat. But only one hundred and fifty have been invited to attend the awarding ceremony scheduled to be held in Trincomalee Sri Lanka Navy playgrounds on October 29th morning, educcation sources said.

Sri Lanka's President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge is expected to attend the event and hand over scholarships.

Rest of the students will be distributed with Millenium Scholarship awards through their respective zonal education offices in the northeast province, sources said.

Each student will be awarded a scholarship for a sum of Rs 2,400/= per year for a period of two years. The selection of students had been made on the basis of scores and the income level of parents, education sources said.

Parliamentarians of the Trincomalee district have been invited for the event, sources said.
