Inaugural JMC meeting planned

The inaugural meeting of the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) will be held today at the Nallur Hindu Hostel premises in the Jaffna town, presided over by Jaffna Mayor Sarojini Yogeswaran. The Democratic Peoples' Liberation Front (DPLF), the principal party in opposition in the JMC, is expected to put up 10 proposals for consideration by the Council today.
They include: renaming the S J V Chelvanayakam Memorial, and the area adjacent to it as Chelvanayakam Square; a memorial column to be put up in memory of the persons who died during the Tamil Research Conference in Jaffna, as well as the commanders, fighters and civilians who died in the freedom struggle; the Durraiappah Stadium and the open air stadium be named after Chelvanayakam. Local Government elections in the Jaffna District and parts of the Kilinochchi District was held in late January. The inaugural sittings having been delayed due to various considerations including a lack of government funds of to run the JMC.
