UNICEF distributes learning materials to Trinco students

Educational Development Organization (EDO) of Trincomalee District, supported by UNICEF, distributed teaching and learning materials to teachers and students serving in twenty Happy Learning Centres (HLC) at an event held at Trincomalee Vivekananda College Sunday morning. EDO runs twenty HLCs that are conducting classes to rural students who are behind in their education due to war and poverty in the Trincomalee district, sources said.

On Saturday the EDO held a one-day residential workshop for twenty-two teachers who are in charge of the Happy Learning Centres. These teachers were also honoured at the event held Sunday for their devotion and commitment in uplifting the education of affected students.

EDO co-ordinator and a former Director of Education Mr.K.Thangarajah said thirteen Happy Learning Centres are functioning in Muttur east, Eeachilampathu and Pattithidal held by LTTE and nine in Kuchchaveli and villages close to Trincomalee in the government controlled areas. The objective of the project is to provide better education to rural students as schools in their villages are not provided with required education resources, he said.

Mr.R.Thiakalingam, Provincial Education Ministry Secretary who was the chief guest at the event honoured 22 teachers by presenting them with certificates and shields. He also distributed learning materials to HLC students.

Mr.T.Thavasilingam, who is the Chairman of Trincomalee District NGOs Consortium also handed over sports equipments and teaching materials to HLC teachers.

EDO organizer, Mr.P.Uthayakumar, and Mr.A. Rangabalan, EDO Chairman, also spoke.

Muttur Zonal Director of Education Mr.A.L.A.Kuthoos also participated as one of the guests of honour. The other guest of honour was Mr.Thavasilingam.
